Sydney to Unwind Escapes: The Scenic Hawkesbury Day Trip Guide
Three scenic driving routes from Sydney to the Central Coast via the Hawkesbury River, the Old Pacific Highway, and the historic hinterland. Do one on the way up, another on the way home.
A trip to Unwind Escapes should not just begin when you arrive at your luxury glamping dome. The journey itself should set the tone. The Hawkesbury region is the perfect city-to-country transition zone, and we have put together three distinct scenic routes from Sydney to Unwind Escapes so the start or finish of your trip adds to the amazing glamping experience when you arrive. Buckle up, roll the windows down, pick out your road-trippin' playlist, and explore the history, food, and nature of the Hawkesbury and the Central Coast.
The full loop: We recommend taking Route 1: The Old Pacific Highway on the way up for its cafes and bushland stops, enjoying your stay at the dome, and then heading home via Route 2: The Estuary & Oyster Route through Brooklyn for oysters and the Riverboat Postman. Or reverse it. Mix and match however you like. If you want the ultimate slow-travel immersion, take Route 3: The Hinterland & Historic Ferry Route through Wisemans Ferry and Yarramalong Valley in either direction.
Route 1: The Old Pacific Highway
Berowra → Cowan → Mount White → Calga → Somersby → Yarramalong → Dooralong
Drive time: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours | The vibe: Leave the M1 behind and take the road it replaced
Why this route: The Old Pacific Highway is the original road between Sydney and the Central Coast. It is a historic, winding ribbon of tarmac that cuts through sandstone gorges, eucalyptus forests, and quiet hinterland villages. The M1 Motorway was built to bypass it, which means it has been left beautifully undisturbed. It takes longer, and that is exactly the point.
Pie in the Sky
Before descending into the Hawkesbury gorge, stop at this iconic, old-school roadhouse perched high above the bushland. Pie in the Sky is a legendary pitstop for motorcyclists and road-trippers, offering handmade pies and sweeping views over the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It is unpretentious, perfectly nostalgic, and exactly the kind of place that makes you glad you skipped the motorway. Grab a pie, take in the view, and feel the city start to fall away.
1296 Pacific Highway, Cowan NSW 2081
Saddles
This is an absolute must-do. Saddles is a stunning, premium bakehouse and eatery situated on 28 acres of bushland along the Old Pacific Highway. With its sandstone fireplace, brass accents, and chairs crafted from bespoke saddles, it perfectly captures upscale, rustic charm. They focus on local, seasonal produce, making it an ideal long-lunch stop that seamlessly matches the Unwind Escapes aesthetic. It is the kind of place where you walk in for a coffee and end up staying for two hours. Do not skip it.
4342 Old Pacific Highway, Mount White NSW 2250
Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary
Just off the Old Pacific Highway, Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary is a fantastic stop for eco-conscious guests. It is an active conservation park working to protect native Australian species, including several endangered programs. Guests can stretch their legs on the bushwalking tracks, see ancient Aboriginal rock art, and walk freely among kangaroos and emus. It is genuine conservation work, not a tourist zoo, and the kind of hands-on nature experience that aligns perfectly with the values behind Unwind Escapes.
1 Darkinjung Road, Calga NSW 2250
Somersby Falls
A short detour from the highway takes you to one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots on the Central Coast. Somersby Falls is a cascading waterfall set within lush subtropical rainforest inside Brisbane Water National Park. There is a dedicated picnic area and a walking track that lets you immerse yourself in the deep green of the hinterland. It is the perfect final nature stop before you wind your way through Yarramalong and into Dooralong, arriving at your dome feeling like you have already spent a full day in nature.
Somersby Falls Road, Somersby NSW 2250
Free entry. National Park vehicle entry fees may apply.
Our pick: Saddles is the standout. If you only have time for one stop on this route, make it a long brunch or lunch there. If you have the full day, combine Pie in the Sky early on, Saddles for lunch, and then Somersby Falls to stretch your legs before the final stretch into Dooralong.
Route 2: The Estuary & Oyster Route
This route focuses on the lower Hawkesbury around Brooklyn and Mooney Mooney, right off the main freeway. It is a highly convenient but beautifully slow-paced detour that pairs perfectly with the M1 Pacific Motorway. Expect oysters straight from the river, a certified eco-tourism pearl farm, and a mail boat that has been running since 1910.
Broken Bay Pearl Farm
This is a flawless brand match for Unwind Escapes. Broken Bay is NSW's only pearl farm and holds a prestigious certification from Ecotourism Australia. Guests can take an immersive boat tour on the Hawkesbury River to learn about sustainable marine practices and the cultivation of rare Akoya pearls, capping it off with an oyster tasting at their "Shellar Door." It is the kind of hands-on, educational experience that makes a getaway feel genuinely enriching rather than just scenic.
Mooney Mooney, NSW (boat departs from Brooklyn)
Bookings essential. Tours run on select days.
Hawkesbury River Oyster Shed
For an authentic, unpretentious farm-to-table experience, this is hard to beat. The Hawkesbury River Oyster Shed is a small, family-run operation right on the water where guests can sit outside, separate their own shells for recycling, and eat fresh local oysters and prawns sourced directly from the river in front of them. It is zero-mile dining in its purest form, and the kind of place you will not find on any tourist strip.
Mooney Mooney, NSW 2083
The Riverboat Postman
This is slow travel at its finest. Operating since 1910, the Riverboat Postman is a working vessel that still delivers mail and essentials to the water-access-only settlements scattered along the Hawkesbury River. Guests can jump aboard the morning run, enjoy a ploughman's lunch on the water, and listen to the skipper's stories about local history and the ancient sandstone geology of the river. It is the kind of experience that forces you to put the phone away, sit back, and let the river set the pace before you continue your drive north to Dooralong.
Departs from Brooklyn, NSW 2083
Morning departures, approximately 3.5 hours return
Our pick: If you can only fit in one stop, make it the Riverboat Postman. It is one of the most unique experiences in the Sydney region and nothing else resets your headspace quite like spending a morning on the water before arriving at an off-grid dome. If seafood is your priority, pair the Oyster Shed with the Pearl Farm for an unforgettable food and nature combination.
Route 3: The Scenic Hinterland & Historic Ferry Route
Hornsby → Wisemans Ferry → Bucketty → Yarramalong → Dooralong
Drive time: Approximately 3 hours | The vibe: Roll the windows down and let the hinterland do its thing
A note on this route: While this drive takes longer than the M1 Motorway, it is a spectacular, highly scenic journey. We recommend this path if you are ready to turn off your highway brain, roll the windows down, and take your time winding through the historic hinterland. It is not a shortcut. It is the point.
Wisemans Ferry Crossing
Leave the city behind as you turn off your engine and let the historic, cable-drawn car ferry glide you across the Hawkesbury River. There is no booking, no ticket, and no rushing. You simply line up, roll on, and watch the river carry you across. It is a free crossing that has operated for generations, and it forces you to immediately slow down to "river time." This single moment is the unofficial start of your Unwind experience.
Old Northern Road, Wisemans Ferry, NSW 2775
Free crossing. Operates 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Settlers Arms Inn
Built in 1836 from convict-hewn sandstone, the Settlers Arms Inn is one of the most atmospheric pubs in NSW. Tucked away in the quiet Macdonald Valley, it feels completely removed from modern life. Roaming peacocks wander the garden, local farm dogs sun themselves out front, and the food is hearty, honest country fare. It is the perfect historic pitstop for a long lunch or a cold drink before you wind your way into the Yarramalong Valley. If you appreciate history and character over polish, this place was made for you.
The Bucketty to Yarramalong Descent
This is not a venue but a stretch of road that deserves its own entry. After passing through the bushland of Bucketty, you will wind your way down into the lush, green pastures of the Yarramalong Valley. It is a stunning transition from rugged native bush to rolling farmland, with views opening up wider with every bend. By the time you reach the valley floor, you will feel like you have driven into a completely different world. It perfectly prepares you for the tranquility of your off-grid dome in Dooralong.
George Downes Drive, Bucketty to Yarramalong Valley Road
Allow 30 to 40 minutes for this section. Do not rush it.
Our pick: This entire route works best as a single, unbroken experience. Do not try to rush through it. Leave Sydney in the late morning, stop at the Settlers Arms for lunch, and time your arrival at Dooralong for late afternoon. You will pull up to your dome in exactly the right headspace.
Make It a Two-Night Trip
Stay two nights at Unwind Escapes and use your second day to follow our curated Hunter Valley Day Trip. Organic wineries, farm-to-table restaurants, and craft distilleries, all about an hour from your dome. Take one of the scenic Hawkesbury routes on the way up, spend a day exploring wine country, and head home via a different route on the way back. Two nights gives you the full Central Coast experience.
The Unwind Escapes Hunter Valley Day Trip
A self-guided itinerary through the Hunter Valley's best organic wineries, biodynamic vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants, and craft distilleries. We built it specifically for our guests.
Which Route Is Right for You?
All three routes end at the same place: your off-grid dome in Dooralong Valley. The question is simply what kind of journey you want to have getting there, and whether you want to do a different route on the way home.
Route 1: The Old Pacific Highway
- Best if you want premium cafes, bushland dining, and nature stops along the way
- A more scenic alternative to the M1 without adding too much extra time
- Excellent as the first leg of a loop, paired with Route 2 on the way home
- Saddles alone is worth the detour off the motorway
Route 2: The Estuary & Oyster Route
- Best as a detour off the M1 Pacific Motorway, either on the way up or home
- Ideal for seafood lovers and eco-tourism enthusiasts
- Easy to fit into your drive with a short, scenic detour through Brooklyn
- Works beautifully as the homeward leg of a full loop
Route 3: The Scenic Hinterland & Historic Ferry Route
- Best if you love history, nature, and winding country roads
- Adds approximately 1 to 1.5 hours compared to the M1
- The most immersive option for guests who want the journey to be the experience
- Spectacular final descent into the Yarramalong Valley before Dooralong
The Best Part of Every Route
The scenic drives are brilliant, but the real magic is what you arrive to. Pull into the Dooralong Valley as the afternoon light filters through the redwoods, step out of the car, and feel the quiet hit you. No traffic, no crowds, no agenda. Just your safari tent or geodesic dome waiting at the edge of the bush, a fire pit ready to light, and an evening that belongs entirely to you.
That is the whole point of Unwind Escapes. The route is the adventure, but the accommodation is where you actually unwind. Booking your stay is the one thing you do to make it all real. Once the dome is locked in, the rest of the trip falls into place: pick your route, plan your stops, and know that at the end of it all, you are coming home to dark skies, native bush, and absolutely nothing you need to do. Take the Old Pacific Highway up, the Estuary route home, and you have just turned a weekend into a full Central Coast loop you will not stop talking about.
